TIPS: 1. Don't use programs like lime wire, morpheous, or bear share! These may seem like a cool way to get free music, files and software, but it is a trap just waiting to spring. The files are infected with Viruses, Trojan horses, Spy ware and mal ware. These things can destroy your systems files, performance and allow hackers to access your personal information! Don't rely on antivirus software to pick them up. Best bet is not to use these file sharing programs. 2. Be cautious of who you are getting mail from. Most bad stuff gets into your system by simply opening an e-mail in your mail program. Each time a spammer sends out an e-mail they also program it to notify them if you have opened it and to send that address to the other millions of spam lists out there. The next thing you know your inbox is full of allot of stuff you don't want from people you don't know. You can avoid this by setting your mail program not to auto preview the message. By setting this the e-mail is not opened and the spammer does not get a message that your e-mail address is valid. You should delete the unwanted items right away and then empty your deleted items folder. Also NEVER select the option on a web page or e-mail to remove you from a list, this is a trap! as soon as you click it, it asks for your e-mail address and WHAM! your address has just been send to about a million spam lists that send mail. Here is a link to help you how to set this up in outlook: http://www.bc.edu/offices/help/meta-elements/doc/articles/html/EM-outlkautopreview001.shtml Another way is to setup a contact list in your e-mail program and only allow the messages that come form people in your contact list to go to your inbox. All other mail can be sent to Junk mail or deleted items. Steps to setup rules:
3. Keep the KIDS under careful watch!. One thing I would suggest is to create multiple user accounts on your computer. One for you and one for each child. Don't give the accounts admin rights!. This way if they get prompted to install something like a new game they will have to get approval from someone with admin rights. Please use the help desk link to get information on how to set this up.
